After more than ten years of development, Guangdong has become an important production base and trade center for the national LED lighting industry. He said that LED lighting is the "third revolution" of lighting sources after incandescent lamps and fluorescent lamps. Industry is concentrated at the bottom of the "pyramid"

It is understood that the LED industry chain includes epitaxial wafer production, chip production, chip packaging and product application. At present, there are more than 3,000 LED related companies in China, including more than 60 LED epitaxial and chip companies, more than 1,000 LED packaging companies, and nearly 2,000 LED application companies. There are not many enterprises that really master the core technology. A large number of enterprises are concentrated in the middle and lower reaches, which makes the LED industry structure form a relatively "pyramid" structure.

In the upstream segment, the core patents for LED lighting are basically controlled by companies such as Japan's Nichia, Toyota Synthetic, Toshiba, Lumileds, Cree, and Osram, Germany, and these companies use their own core patents to adopt a combination of vertical and horizontal The expansion method has a strict patent network arranged around the world.

From the perspective of industrial layout, the development of China's LED industry is extremely uneven. According to the statistics of the National Development and Reform Commission, the total output value of China's semiconductor lighting in 2008 was nearly 70 billion yuan, of which the output value of the chip was 1.9 billion yuan, the package was 18.5 billion yuan, the output value of applied products was 45 billion yuan, and the ratio of chip, package and application value was 1:9: twenty two.

In recent years, the number of patents for LEDs in China has risen rapidly, but the technology is relatively extensive. It is mainly concentrated in low-margin and mid-stream industries such as LED packaging and LED applications, while the number of epitaxial growth and chip manufacturing patents is small.

It is understood that MOCVD (Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition) equipment is the "critical" device for making LED epitaxial wafers, and the level of LED epitaxial wafers determines the level of the entire LED industry. At present, only the United States, Germany, Japan, South Korea and other countries can produce MOCVD equipment.

According to relevant statistics, Germany AIXTRON (Ai Siqiang) and the United States VEECO (Veco Precision Instruments Co., Ltd.) almost produced more than 90% of the world's mainstream MOCVD equipment. In China, although several units have developed it, it has also been sampled for trial use, but it is not limited by technical limitations.

Industry experts said that although China's LED industry has no right to speak in the upstream, it has gained a lot in the middle and lower reaches. At present, China has become the world's largest LED packaging production base, providing products to the world, LED street lights, general lighting backlight modules and other technologies are in the world's leading ranks.

At the same time that the government and the local government spare no effort to promote the development of the LED industry, enterprises have also begun to aim at the "discourse power". Patent "breakthrough" path exploration

Chen Jiaqiang said that from a business perspective, "application-driven development" is also an option. Since LED lighting will eventually “land” to the application level, the government should not ignore the application.

It is understood that "grasping the application and promoting development" is also one of the main strategies for the development of LED industry in Guangdong.
